Hey gargantuan - I know this is an old thread, but yes, I agree - you are a connoisseur of sad music. Elliot Smith and Damien Rice have lots of melancholic songs. And Bright Eyes' "Lua" can induce me to tears, if I'm already in a down mood. Isn't it fascinating how the right tones/rhythms paired up with poignant lyrics can truly alter one's mood? It's like the listener becomes part of this Sadness, which does not belong to a particular person or event, and yet strikes an emotionally deep chord in one's heart.
As a huge Beatles fan, I'd say "Blackbird" and "Yesterday" are blue tunes. Also, Yann Tiersen's instrumental compositions from the film, "Amelie." Oh! And Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglove (from the film, "Once") are a duo of sadness.

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
If you know the backstory of the song, it's extremely sad.

If you know the backstory of the song, it's extremely sad. Yeah, the story is definitely what made me a little teary-eyed.

I use some of these songs to get relaxed.
Probably not the saddest still:
Jason Webley - Meet Your Bride.
It's on "The Cost of Living", the way he sings the lyrics is so moving.
